The Institute of Israeli Drama (R.A.) was founded in the year 2000 by Mr. Noam Semel, General Director of the Cameri Theater of Tel-Aviv. Mr. Semel founded the Institute after the demise of Hanoch Levin - playwright, author, poet and director - an outstanding artist, whose oeuvre stands as one of the basic foundations of Israeli cultural history. The Institute set as its goal, the promotion of Israeli Drama and the raising of awareness to its crucial role in the formation of Israeli culture, both in Israel and abroad.
The Institute, in cooperation with the playwrights union of Israel, operates in the following fields:
Publication of Israeli plays - thus far, once the audience leaves the theater, their experience remains in the realm of memory or forgetfulness. For the first time, and as a direct result of this project, the audience can carry their experience to their homes and not leave it behind. As a result, the work is transformed into an asset, not only for the spectator but for future generations that have perhaps not seen the play. By being available they continue to exist.
Symposiums and conferences for the general public and special seminars on the topic of: "Original Drama". The participation in these seminars includes arts and theater teachers, playwrights, actors, designers, musicians and academics. The seminar programs are held in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.
Translation of Contemporary Israeli Drama Enterprise, with the purpose of exposing Israeli drama, encouraging its staging in theaters throughout the world. The project is aided by the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Science, Culture & Sport.
IsraDrama, Tel-Aviv - Spotlight on Israeli Drama. Once a year, an event is produced to expose Israeli Drama to the International Theater Community: Festival directors, General Directors of Theaters, Theater Directors, Artistic Directors, Dramaturges and journalists.
The event is held in conjunction with the Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo - Culture and Arts Division, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sport - Culture Administration, and with the support of the Yehoshua Rabinowitz Tel Aviv Foundation for the Arts.
Staging Israeli plays around the world - Ever since the establishment of the Institute, Israeli plays are staged in major Theaters around the world including: Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, England, Austria, Span, Sweden, Russia, Estonia, Kenya, The Philippines, China, Mexico and the United States of America.
